Nancy Jo Gambacurta

Born and raised in the Rochester area, Nancy Jo received an Associates Degree from Monroe Community College and a Bachelors Degree from Empire State College. Her primary area of study has always been the visual arts.  Her  paintings and sculptures are included in private collections in this region and around the eastern U.S. She has participated in group and single artist exhibitions and recently had one-woman shows at NTID’s Dyer Arts Center at RIT and the Shoe Factory Art Co-op. Many of Nancy Jo’s paintings are included in the Elizabeth Collection at ArtisanWORKS, Rochester, NY.

The paintings on display at the salon are part of Nancy Jo’s Western Travelogue series. In the autumn of 2001 the artist and her husband toured the American West for three months photographing the incredible sculptural landscapes. From a resource of hundreds of photos Nancy later generated more than one hundred studies and then created several dozen acrylic paintings on canvas. Ten of these works are shown below.

The forms are simplified and the colors are fanciful. For the viewer it is designed to be both a western travelogue and a journey through the mind’s eye of the artist. Oranges and reds predominate. Skies are simple. Nods are made to famous artists. Special attention is paid to Utah but mostly this show is about fabulous formations and the wonder these geological forms instill in us.
